As a teenager, my doctor told me I was pre-diabetic. It had been five years since my family emigrated from Trinidad to the US, and the transition was difficult. I was also being bullied at school. Overweight, miserable and full of self-loathing, I turned to junk food and sugary soda for comfort. When the doctor showed me images of patients with lost limbs resulting from full-blown diabetes, I was terrified.
I was also determined.
Channeling challenge into change, I played basketball every day and cut back on the snacks. I returned to school feeling stronger mentally and physically. Newly empowered and proud of my accomplishments, I began lifting weights. As a result, the bullying stopped and so did the feelings of victimhood and worthlessness.
I went on to build a lucrative career modeling for Nike, Target and Vitamin Shoppe. But it wasn’t enough. I found myself more interested in giving people fitness tips than comparing biceps while working as a shirtless model at Abercrombie and Fitch. My interest in fitness went beyond the aesthetic, and eventually so did my expertise.
Not only did I become a certified personal trainer, I got a certificate in Fitness Nutrition, because I know first hand the importance of diet and exercise. My client base has grown exponentially and easily over the last seven years. I love working with people one-on-one, reminding them of their inner strength and ability to turn thing around, just as I did so many years ago.
There is no greater feeling than being a positive influence in somebody’s life. As I continue to expand my understanding of health and fitness, I want to share my experience and expertise with as many people as I can – and that is why I have created this site.
Looking forward to joining you on the journey!
